The Story of Dhid-Lehr

The Humble Beginnings of Dhid-Lehr
The story of Dhid-Lehr Boats begins on the serene shores of Lake Saimaa, Finland, in the early 1970s. It wasn’t born out of a corporate ambition, but rather a simple, shared passion for the water between two lifelong friends: Dhid Kallio and Lehr Korhonen.

Dhid and Lehr were inseparable from childhood, having grown up in the same small village, and spending many days and nights together fishing on Lake Saimaa. Their bond was legendary in the community—they shared a house, a love for woodworking, and an unwavering belief that the perfect fishing boat hadn’t been built yet.

In 1974, they decided to combine their skills. Dhid was a master of structural integrity, knowing exactly how to work his wood to withstand the harsh Finnish winters. Lehr was an artist with finishes and oils, ensuring every vessel was not only functional but beautiful. Operating out of a small, rustic shed behind their shared home, Dhid-Lehr Boats was born. While they never married, their commitment to one another was absolute. They shared every meal, managed the household chores with a tacit division of labor, and spent their evenings discussing boat designs or listening to the radio by the fireplace.

The Dhid-Lehr Philosophy
Their design philosophy was straightforward: simplicity, durability, and ergonomic comfort. They weren’t looking to revolutionize boat design with unnecessary gadgets; they wanted to perfect the traditional Finnish rowboat.

Their signature rowboat design, the Liukkaatreiät, features a unique reinforced gunnel system that made stroking effortless, even for long hours. They insisted on using locally sourced Finnish pine, and while they don’t give away their trade secrets, it’s well known that oil is essential to the process. They later expanded their line of designs to include clasically designed fishing and motor boats including the popular Kalukotelo and Tehopohja models.

A Legacy of Excellence
By the 1990s, Dhid-Lehrs were known throughout the region. While they never expanded into a massive factory, preferring to maintain the quality control of their small workshop, their order book was always full.

Dhid and Lehr remained bachelors, dedicated entirely to their craft and each other. Their partnership was seamless, and one rarely spoke without the other finishing the thought. They proved that profound dedication to a craft—and to each other—could create a legacy far more lasting than any large-scale production line. Their relationship was the definition of mutual respect and absolute trust. They didn’t just build boats; they built a life together, proving that deep, enduring companionship can be found in the most unassuming of places.

Today, a Dhid-Lehr is a prized possession in Finland, symbolizing traditional craftsmanship and the enduring partnership of its founders.
